Breast Implant Choice, How do I choose?

Silicone, Saline and now Foam (Brazilian implants) — is only one piece of the pie. Other breast implant choices i include the implant surface (textured or smooth?), implant shape (round or contoured?) and implant profile or projection and placement not to mention incision choices.

Don’t feel overwhelmed. below we have gathered informative information on the different implant types to save you time on the research!

You should know the advantages and disadvantages to all of the breast implant choices and options currently available. This knowledge will allow you to ask more educated questions at your consultation with your Plastic Surgeon in Thailand , as well as guide you to decide which particular breast implant is right for you.

Breast implant size and choosing the right size for your new breast implants is important. The #1 reason that women go back for revision breast augmentation is because they wish they went bigger, but bigger isn’t always better , especially if you have a tiny frame. Deciding to have breast augmentation is the easiest part of the process. Choosing the right size breast implant can take a little longer. The keyword here is YOU. Choose a size that makes YOU happy, not your spouse, significant other, family member or best friend. After all, you’re the one who will be living with this decision.

Breast Implant Fill

Saline v Gel

Saline and Gel Implant

Although saline implants are still available they are rarely used anymore, A number of patients who had saline filled implants are now switching to silicone implants because of the more natural feel of these implants.

Silicone Gel Implants
Currently the most popular choice for augmentation procedures. Silicone implants offer more natural looking and feeling results than other types of breast implants because silicone gel is more similar in consistency to breast tissue. Silicone gel breast implants come pre-filled, meaning that there is no fill to be added. The only real drawback to a pre-filled implant is that the incision will have to be a bit longer, depending on the size of the implant to be inserted.

Types Breast Implants

The two basic breast implant shapes are round and teardrop. Breasts differ greatly from woman to woman, so the ideal breast implant shape for each patient must be determined with care.

Should your surgeon place your breast implants over, partially under or under the chest muscles? Get informed on the advantages and disadvantages of your implant placement options below

Breast Implant Thailand Incision Choices,

there are three main options for breast implant incisions. Implants can be inserted through incisions around the nipple (periareolar incision), under the breast in the inframammary crease (inframammary incision),or in the armpit (transaxillary incision). The choice of incision pattern for your breast augmentation depends on your surgeon’s preference or training, your anatomy, your goals and the type and size of your breast implants.

Breast Implant Placement

Like every other decision about breast implant surgery, the question of whether to place the implant under the muscle ,partial or or over is the subject of much debate, with confusion and misinformation in every direction. Suffice it to say that there is no single best method that applies to every patient

Breast Implant Placment

Placement of Breast Implants

Sub-glandular Placement: Breast implants placed under your natural breast tissue, which is called either sub-glandular or over the muscle

Sub-muscular Placement: Breast implants placed under the pectoral muscles, called sub-muscular or under the muscle.

Duel Plane or Partial Sub-pectoral– The top 2/3 of the breast implant is covered by the pectorals muscle.

Why is plastic surgery in Thailand so attractive?

Medical tourism has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years as more people begin to embrace the idea of combining a holiday with a medical procedure.

More and more countries are beginning to offer services to foreigners, but plastic surgery in Thailand continues to stand out as a great option to consider, and here’s why.

Price Surgery in Thailand

At a fraction of the cost of having the same surgery in Australia, you can see an internationally recognised surgeon and enjoy the hospitality Thailand is known for. You can choose to have all kinds of surgery here, from breast augmentation to liposuction and face lifts.

In fact, the cost of surgery in Australia has continued to increase, making Thailand even more attractive.

Top quality professional service

Despite offering a lower rate, there is no more risk than if you had the same surgery  in Australia. In fact, people have been making the journey from Down Under to Thailand for plastic surgery for years – a sure sign this is comparable to the services offered in Australia’s services.

Top of the line equipment

Rather than fear you will be treated with outdated tools, choosing a Thai hospital will mean you can benefit from the latest in medical instruments and innovation for the best possible outcome.

Comfortable amenities

You may not feel your best immediately after surgery and plastic surgery is the same. However, being ensconced in comfort will go a long way to improve your comfort levels and Thailand can offer this service – and with a view, too.

A holiday

Thailand can also offer much in the way of surgery, but another boon is that you can enjoy a holiday while you are recovering or even as you are preparing for surgery. Soak up the sun, experience the culture and revel in the opportunities here. The food isn’t bad, either.

Do I need to Replace Breast Implants?

replace implants

The rule of thumb or lets call it what it is the the Myth out there has been for a long time that breast implants should be changed every ten years, but is this really true?

Should breast implants be replaced at their tenth anniversary? If your breast implants are ten years old, is it time to change them? The question comes up in every Plastic Surgeon’s Office worldwide daily.

While it is unrealistic to expect that every breast implant will last indefinitely,  routine implant replacement every 10 years is neither necessary nor justified. Implants in some women may last many years while in others they need to be replaced on one or more occasions if there is a problem.  In essence, the exact life span of any implant is unpredictable

Why are Breast Implants Removed?
According to the FDA, breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. In order of occurrence, the most common reasons for breast implant removal are:
1) the patient’s desire to change implant size or style,

2) deflation and

3) capsular contracture. These three reasons account for about 90% of all the breast implants that are removed. Other less common reasons for implant removal and replacement include: implant malposition, wrinkling, palpability, breast pain and iatrogenic injury (inadvertently broken by a doctor). Not on the list: breast implants are ten years old.

If My Breast Implant are older are the More Likely it is to Fail?
If you are happy with your size, there is no indication of leakage, your breast remain soft and are not painful, the fact that your breast implants are ten years old is not a reason to have your implants removed or exchanged. The older the implant, the more likely it is to wear out, but most breast implants last longer than ten years.

For saline implants, leaks are pretty easy to determine. If saline filled breast implants leak, they flatten, and it is obvious that there is a leak. For the more common silicone gel filled breast implants, the shell of the implant can be damaged without any outward sign of leakage. This is termed a silent rupture. If you have silicone gel filled breast implants, the FDA recommends obtaining an MRI of your breasts at three years, and then every two years after surgery to check for a silent leak. If a leak is discovered, the implant should be removed, or replaced, to prevent gel migration and additional scar formation.

Breast Implant Warranties
The two most common Breast Implants used in any reputable Thailand Hospital are Mentor and SIlmed manufacturers both offering warranties on their breast implants. Both offer similar warranties, although the details vary by manufacturer and implant (saline vs. gel).

At the time of this post, both companies will replace a defective implant for free. Both companies will allow you to change style with the cost based on the differential between the current implant and the new style selected. If the new style costs more, you are charged only the difference in price in most cases. Financial support is also available during the first ten years to reduce the cost of the replacement surgery.

Details can be found on your breast implant manufacturer’s web site. For the Phuket, it will be either Silmed or Mentor. Click here for the Silmed Breast Implant Warranty or here for theMentor Breast Implant Warranty. If you do not know the manufacturer, please contact your plastic surgeon. They should keep a record of your implant manufacturer, catalogue number and size.
Breast Implant Revision Surgery
The bottom line is that most breast implants do not need to be replaced at ten years. If you have breast implant surgery in Thailand, it is reasonable to expect to need another surgery at some point in the future. The chances of having breast augmentation revision surgery within ten years of your initial breast augmentation is somewhere between 25% and 50%, and only about half of these breast augmentation revision surgeries involve replacing the breast implants. Reoperation rates are higher for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. If your breast implant has deflated, be certain to check your warranty. Most deflated implants will be replaced at no cost, and you many be eligible for assistance to defray the cost of surgery if the replacement occurs within ten years of your primary breast augmentation.

You do need to be aware how your breasts can change over the years. As we age our skin and muscle and breast change, so yes the implants may last our lifetime, but in say 20 years they may not still look the way you want. Being aware of this you need to factor in that it is possible in the future that you may need another operation to either lift or replace your implants, not cause they are damaged, but due to natural causes.

In closing if there is no problem why should a woman be subjected to the inconvenience, risks and costs of further surgery when there is no good reason to do so?  If routine replacement every 10 years was important or beneficial, regulations would certainly exist to compel surgeons to replace every implant after 10 years – and clearly this is not the case!

Reduce Scaring after Breast Surgery

If you are looking at having breast augmentation surgery in Thailand, you might have a few concerns about scarring.

Here are some of the ways you can minimise this so you will be bikini ready in no time.

Choose a good surgeon

An internationally accredited surgeon will be able to perform surgery in such a way that he or she leaves behind a very minimal scar.

The doctors in Thailand use the very latest in equipment and technique in order to reduce the chances of scarring.

Are there products that can be used to minimise scarring?

Your surgeon will offer you advice about how to look after your skin to prevent scarring.

While no product can completely remove a scar, they can help to minimise the effect on your body and protect it from irritation that can lead to scarring.

Often silicone-based sheeting can be used to reduce the thickness of scars, but it is essential to ask your doctor about this before attempting it.

Another great product is Hyper Heal Scar Cream that can be used Post Surgery after any stitches are removed to accelerate healing and improve scar appearance significantly.

Stay out of the sun

The sun’s harmful rays can cause scars to become thicker and darker, so where possible avoid the sun on the affected areas.

For the six months following surgery, you should keep the area covered and use an SPF 30 sunscreen to ensure the area is protected.

Use a pressure bandage

Following your surgery, you will be advised about what kind of bandages you need to wear, but keep in mind that pressure bandages may be able to flatten scars.

Consider vitamin E supplements

This vitamin has been known to assist with scar tissue management, so might be able to improve the appearance of your skin.

Before you take anything though, it is essential to run it by your surgeon to make sure it won’t interfere with any of the medications you have been prescribed.
