The most popular cosmetic surgeries as defined in age groups vary throughout various countries. Close to 9.2 million cosmetic procedures were accomplished in the United States alone seeing Americans spend nearly $10 billion on cosmetic procedures within a year.
Below are some of the findings in the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, also known as the ASAPS. Since 1997, cosmetic procedures have increased 197% for men and women combined and there have been numerous changes and developments in surgical procedures over the years. According to the ASAPS one of the reasons that the numbers of people undertaking surgical procedures are raising is that people need to stay in the work force until later in life, which means that they must contend with their younger counterparts for the same jobs.
Top Surgical Procedures in the US
In the US liposuction was top the list of most popular plastic surgeries and injections of botulinum toxin type A (Botox and Dysport) placed as the top of nonsurgical procedures, the statistics showed. According to the official statistics, the top five surgical procedures last year in the US were:
- Breast augmentation
- Eyelid surgery
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
We can also see that two-thirds of women electing to have breast augmentation with implants chose silicone-filled breast implants. This shows us that women as well as plastic surgeons are becoming more comfortable with the safety of silicone implants.
Top Surgical Procedures in the Australia
Australian surgeons noted a general rise in cosmetic surgery within Australia over the last 10 years. Australia recently spending in excess of $1 billion a year on cosmetic procedures. Breast augmentation, abdominoplasty and rhinoplasty were identified as the top 3 cosmetic procedures in Australia. According to an internal survey conducted by the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and information provided by the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, the top five surgical procedures in Australia are:
The Price of Beauty
Although the USA has a much larger population and spent around $10 billion on surgical and non-surgical procedures, in comparison, this number has to take into account the population differences between the two nations. If we look at how many dollars are spent per 10,000 people, it seems Australians are spending almost 40% more per capita than their counterparts in the USA. With the figures showing $454,500 spent per ten thousand people, compared to $328,000 per ten thousand for the USA, and the exchange rate at the time close to even, Australians are spending more than ever on plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.
The average cost of breast augmentation in the US is somewhere around $5,000, while in Australia it can be anywhere between $8,000 – $15,000 AUD. This makes Thailand’s cost of breast augmentation being, on average, around $3,800 the most affordable option.
Similarly the cost of abdominoplasty on average in the US is somewhere around $6,000, which is more or less the same as Australia which sits somewhere between $6000 and $8000 AUD. Thailand’s cost of abdominoplasty, or as it’s more commonly known a tummy tuck, comes in again as the most affordable at around $5,200. Australia is consistently the most expense, even taking the currency difference into consideration. Cosmetic surgery in Thailand is the most affordable option for both the US and Australia’s most popular cosmetic surgeries.
